The Top 10 Festive Films to Watch This Christmas Season

At the Dovetail office we’re absolutely buzzing for Christmas. To channel that excitement, we’ve put together a list – one we’d call indisputable – of the top 10 best festive films to watch this Christmas! To make things that much easier, we’ve also included where to find each festive film. So, grab some popcorn and your hot chocolate and take your pick from our selection or work your way through the whole list if you really want to treat yourself!

1. The Holiday

One of Laura’s all time favourite movies, and not just for Christmas either! A modern classic when it comes to Christmas movies, starring many familiar faces such as Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, Jude Law and Kate Winslet.

The film follows the adventures of two strangers Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) who swap homes for Christmas to get away from the disaster of their most recent relationships. Split between sunny LA and snow-covered England.  Not that we can remember what that looks like – so if you need a refresher or you just love a feel-good film this is a perfect choice.

2. Home Alone

A Christmas staple – Following Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), who is left home alone as the rest of his family rush to the airport to make their flight to Paris during Christmas time. In their manic rush they manage to accidentally leave Kevin behind. Kevin faces a number of challenges – including fighting off two burglars – as his family race to get back to him.

3. Nativity!

A perfect family watch. This film tells the story of an uptight primary school teacher and the lengths he goes to in an attempt to hide his lie about a very special guest from Hollywood coming to visit his class’s Christmas play.

4. The Holiday Calendar

A Christmas RomCom involving an antique advent calendar that seemingly predicts the future. Inherited by a struggling photographer – Kat Graham from The Vampire Diaries. Who starts to develop a romantic relationship alongside her journey of figuring out this magical advent calendar.

5. Elf

Who doesn’t love Elf?! Who hasn’t SEEN Elf?! If you haven’t, it’s definitely worth a watch. A Christmas comedy where Buddy (Will Ferrell), a human, is brought up by Father Christmas’ Elves! Buddy eventually learns that he’s not an elf and decides to find his biological father.  Watch his adventures around New York City at Christmas time.

6. Love Actually

Known by most as the ultimate Christmas romance film – created by the makers of Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’ Diary. It follows eight couples, living in London, through their relationship trials and tribulations and eventually how they navigate the challenges that can arise in a relationship.

7. The Terminal

Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks – just one member in this all-star cast. We follow Viktor’s (Tom Hanks) struggle as he is stranded in John F Kennedy international airport when his passport is revoked by authorities due to complications involving international politics. He is then trapped – with no idea of when he will be able to leave – and makes a home for himself within the airport. Building friendships and a romantic connection during his stay.

8. The Grinch

Would Christmas be complete without The Grinch making the list? This remake of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (starring Jim Carey) is a fantastic film to have on while decorating the tree. No prizes for guessing what the film is about!

9. Holidate

When these two strangers have a not-so-pleasant run in and realise that neither of them have Christmas holiday dates, they put aside their dislike for each other and form an agreement to be each other’s date for the holiday season.

10. The Muppets Christmas Carol

A fun twist on ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. With the characters played by The Muppets! The combination of this classic tale with these nostalgic characters results in a magical film, essential to get you in the Christmas spirit.
