Bournemouth is Thriving
Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch have together been declared one of the most thriving ‘cities’ in the UK with a report stating that the towns are among a handful of places driving the economy.
The gap between Britain’s best and worst performing urban areas has dramatically widened over the last decade – with the report suggesting a drastic north-south divide.
Bournemouth has been ranked fifth in a national league for job creation, with a 10% increase in jobs between 2004 and 2015. It’s also tenth in the table for the number of businesses, with 345.5 businesses for every 10,000 people.
The proportion of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance is one of the lowest too, at 1.3% – the ninth lowest, according to the study.
Education was also highly scored, with just 6.5% of the working population considered to have no formal qualifications – the ninth best in the country. It also has the tenth lowest Co2 emissions per capita and the fifth best broadband speed. The creative and digital sector is one of the strongest in the country too.
For every 12 jobs created since 2004 in cities in southern England, only one was created in cities in the rest of the country.
