Why Career Growth Isn’t Always as Straightforward as It Seems

Progression is a word that comes up a lot in recruitment, and rightly so. Career growth is often expected as we become more capable, confident, and efficient in our roles. Tasks that once felt challenging become second nature, and as a result, many professionals naturally take on more. Whether that’s training new team members, stepping in for a manager, or handling extra projects.

But this kind of progression doesn’t always come with recognition. Sometimes those extra responsibilities are absorbed quietly, without a change in job title, salary, or even a simple “thank you.”

Career growth can be complicated. Even when you’re performing well, there are roadblocks that can make progression feel frustratingly out of reach, such as budget freezes, lack of clarity from management, or the uncomfortable reality that there simply isn’t a more senior role available in your current company.

Most of us are aware of these surface-level challenges. But what’s talked about less often are the personal and emotional hurdles that can come with trying to step up in your career.

Impostor Syndrome

You’re told you’re ready to take the next step. You’ve got the experience, the results, and the trust of your team. But still, that voice creeps in: “Am I actually good enough for this?” Impostor syndrome affects professionals at every level and can make even the most qualified candidates hesitate to put themselves forward.

It’s not always about ability, often, it’s about perception. Overcoming it means learning to recognise your own value, not just waiting for someone else to say it for you.

Burnout

When growth isn’t clearly supported or recognised, it’s easy to push yourself harder in hopes that someone will notice. But piling on extra work (especially without acknowledgement) can quickly lead to burnout.

Progression should feel motivating, not exhausting. If your career path is leaving you drained instead of energised, it’s worth checking whether you’re growing or just taking on more.

Feeling Invisible

One of the more demoralising parts of trying to progress is doing everything right and still feeling like no one sees it. You meet deadlines, step up when needed, support others, and yet somehow, you’re overlooked when new opportunities arise.

Being consistent and capable should be enough, but unfortunately, visibility often plays a big role in career growth. That means sometimes it’s not just about working hard, it’s about making sure the right people know you’re doing it.

So, What Can You Do?

If any of these points hit home, you’re not alone. Career growth isn’t always a straight line and it’s not always about ticking the next box. Sometimes it’s about knowing when to speak up, when to step back, and when to explore opportunities elsewhere.

If you’re feeling stuck, burnt out, or under-recognised in your current role, it might be time to talk it through. Whether you’re ready to make a move or just want advice on how to position yourself for progression, we’re here to help.
